Frequently Asked Questions

Do you do repairs?

Absolutely! Our expert luthiers specialize in repair, restoration, and maintenance of stringed instruments to keep them in top condition. It should be noted that we 100% need to see the instrument in person before we can give a repair quote. Pictures and/or descriptions of the instrument are not sufficient.

Do you rent instruments?

Yes, we rent Violin, Viola, Cello and Bass outfits. NOTE: this is month-to-month rental with 6 months of rental credit applicable towards an instrument purchase, but it is NOT a rent to own program.

Do I need to make an appointment?

Not at all! However, Mr. Prior may be called away from the shop on occasion and your and our time is valuable, so appointments when needed are also welcome.

How often should I change strings or get my bow rehaired?

We recommend that, for optimal performance, strings should be changed yearly. Bows should also be rehaired annually for the same reasons.

What do I need to bring with me to rent?

It's best to bring along children so we can measure them to make sure you get the right size outfit. Internet suggestions of "measuring the arm length" or "grabbing the end of the scroll" are often inaccurate. To complete the paperwork, a drivers license and a credit or debit card are required to be kept on file for payment on all rental and time purchase agreements. The license, card and person responsible for the rental must be physically present to complete paperwork.

What is the difference between your "student" and "professional" quality bow hair?

The "professional" quality is stallion hair of highest quality, selected for optimal elasticity and uniformity. Music professionals will appreciate it's superior playability and how it allows fine bows to perform their best. The "student" quality (still good hair) is a more affordable option and an excellent complement for beginning and intermediate level equipment and musicians.

What kinds of instruments do you carry?

We provide a wide selection of stringed instruments, bows, and accessories for all musicians, from beginners to professionals. Our affordable "Symphony" models are perfect for beginning musicians. The "Chamber" models are the next step for many looking for an instrument to get them through high school and into college. For advancing players we have instruments from carefully chosen suppliers in Germany, Poland, China and Brasil. We also offer master-made and vintage instruments for the discerning professional.

Can I play with your dogs?

We love it when people do! Keep in mind these rules:

  1. They'll bring you their toys when they're ready (sometimes they need Mr. Prior's permission).

  2. The game is fetch. They don't do tug or cuddling.  :)

  3. Throw the toy only in a safe direction.

  4. Be respectful of the fact that they are working dogs FIRST and pets SECOND. They are highly trained and highly motivated!
