The Dogs

An introduction to the real talent behind Custom Strings

Likes and Dislikes

They both love fetch, water, long hikes, frisbee, string cheese, training, new smells, car rides...pretty much all the things active, driven work dogs like.

Like most herding breeds, Reyna doesn't enjoy being pet much and considers it an "off task" activity. Especially when you could be playing fetch instead. She also doesn't care much for seafood, most vegetables and she feels squirrels have no business being in anyone's yard. She loves, loves, loves cats and will very patiently, carefully approach them and wait for them to warm up to her. Most, however, don't accept her invitation.

Rigby is totally into anything you are eating, carrying or have in your bag. He loves children of all ages and gently greets all babies. He also is not a cuddler but he may let you get in a pet or two if you promise to throw his toy after.

Where'd they come from?

Reyna, a McNab Shepherd, was adopted from "Herd You Needed a Home" dog rescue in Bend, Oregon when she was 10 months old. She quickly became a shop favorite and always greets customers.

Rigby was born locally from purebred Labrador Retriever and Australian Shepherd parents. Originally a "COVID puppy", he was rehomed twice more due to his unbounded energy until Mr. Prior found him through a Craigslist ad. They've been inseparable since.

Are they trained?

These guys are WORKING K9s** first and PETS second! That means that they take their jobs to heart and are all about problem solving. As is necessary for such active dogs, both have a great deal of training. From the basics of "Sit"  and "Come" to what they are and aren't allowed to do in a violin store, EVERY day is obedience day. It is important to note that, though they know a staggering amount of tricks and commands, they will only perform them for Mr. Prior. With the exception of fetch, which they gladly will do endlessly with everyone! They are also both trained as Search & Rescue K9's to find lost people. Reyna is now retired but Rigby currently deploys throughout the Inland Northwest with his handler, Mr. Prior.

**A work K9 is a dog that is trained to perform specific tasks to assist humans. They are usually very focused, energetic and trained to very high levels of obedience and performance.

Real questions from real fans!

Reyna, what is your favorite toy?

I like tennis balls and rope toys, but my favorite, all-time, most fun ever toy is FRISBEE. I can't get enough of that one.

-Reyna

This is for either pup, do you ever damage the instruments at the shop?

Oh, no. We'd never do that, but once in a while my tail brushes one. :(

-Rigby

I heard that some dogs eat rosin. Do you guys?

Ugh, never. 0 out of 10 taste. There's always better treats in the kitchen for us.

-Rigby

Do you two get along really well?

Oh yes! Reyna is my best bestest friend!

-Rigby

Uh...yeah, sure. OK, here's the thing, he really needs to respect my toy boundaries and just play with HIS toys. I don't think that's too much to ask. I mean, it's not even the same color!

-Reyna

Mr. Prior says you guys can tell time. Is that true?

He is correct.

-Reyna

What's your favorite instrument?

Bass, definitely. The bags are soooo comfortable.

-Rigby

Do the dogs stay at the business all the time?

Nope! We go with Dad...uh, Mr. Prior wherever he goes. Home, the park, work, the park, errands and even the park!

-Reyna

My dog howls when I practice, does Reyna and Rigby?

We like to listen, of course, but we don't know any of the words to sing along.

-Rigby

What kind of food do you guys eat?

A mixture of high quality kibbles, rice, blueberries, veggies, extra protein, apple, pumpkin, fish oil and joint supplements and sometimes theirs peanut butter. (Dad says he cooks more for us than himself.)

-Rigby

"there's"

-Reyna

Why doesn't Reyna like squirrels?

I do like squirrels. I sit and watch them for hours. And hours. But they're disorderly, running all around, and they need to be organized. I've explained this many, many times. I'll keep telling them until they get it. Squirrel training is all about persistence.

-Reyna

Reyna, why is your toy red and orange and Rigby's toy is green and blue?

Wait, what? My toy is grey. What colors are "red" and "orange"? Are there colors we can't see?!?

-Reyna

Mr. Prior calls you "Reyna" and "Rigby", but what do you call yourselves?

"Fetchmaster the magnificent, long of tongue, finder of lost toys, befriender of all, consumer of the unexpected" and "Reyna".
